Material Life Cycle Research

Spring 2020

This project traces the millions of years long trajectories of three materials used in the construction of Herzog & DeMeuron's Caixa Forum. The investigation focuses on steel, brick, and leds. Starting from the very formation of the materials, following their extraction, fabrication, transportation, assembly, disassembly, transformation, and potential re-use,  the challenge of this project was to visually synthesize and condense the research into a minute long video and a series of collages.

By compressing hundreds millions of years into a minute, the video aims to express the intensity of the energy required to give a building shape. Although this is largely done for human enjoyment, the lifecycles of materials is often overlooked.
